On August 2, 2016, voters will be asked whether they wish to renew the Wixom Public Library’s expiring operating millage at the current rate of 1.08 mills for another 10 years.

Ballot Question

Shall the City of Wixom be authorized to levy a renewal of the previously voted increase in tax limitation, which last resulted in a levy of 1.08 mills ($1.08 on each $1,000 of taxable value), in an amount not to exceed 1.08 mills ($1.08 on each $1,000 of taxable value) against all taxable property within the City of Wixom for a period of ten (10) years, 2017 to 2026, inclusive, for the purpose of operating, maintaining and equipping the Wixom Public Library and for all other library purposes authorized by law?  The estimate of the revenue the City will collect if the millage is approved and levied by the City in the 2017 calendar year is approximately $700,000.  A portion of the revenue may be required to be distributed to the City of Wixom Downtown Development Authority and the Oakland County Brownfield Redevelopment Authority.

The facts

  • The proposition is a renewal, not a tax increase. Your taxes for library services will not increase.
  • The Wixom Public Library has operated under the same millage rate since 2007.
  • Approximately 88% of library funding comes directly from our operating millage.
  • The Library does not receive funding from the City of Wixom. By law, the existing Library funding and proposed renewal is for library services only – they cannot be used for other city operations.
  • Wixom Public Library patrons checked out 169,000 items FY14-15; 5,000 patrons attended library programs; 8,400 residents hold library cards.

What does the millage fund?

The millage funds operating, maintaining and equipping the Library, including the following:

  • Books, DVDs, magazines, audiobooks, music, interlibrary loan, online resources, including digital books and magazines.
  • Educational and entertainment programs for youth, teens and adults, including story-time, summer reading, book clubs, programming about technology, history, art, crafting, finance, nature and more.
  • High speed public Internet computers, printing and wireless access.
  • Resources for young children, students and job seekers.
  • Staff that connects the Wixom community with the resources needed for educational and personal needs.
